Why Indie Bookstores Matter
I’ve always found there is something different about walking into an independent bookstore. It’s not just the shelves or the selection. It’s the feeling that the space has been shaped with intention - that every title has, in some way, been chosen. Not just stocked, but considered.
You don’t move through an indie bookstore the way you browse online. You slow down. You notice things you weren’t looking for. You pick up a book because something about it catches your attention, even if you can’t immediately explain why.
And more often than not, you leave with something you didn’t expect to find. That kind of discovery matters.
Independent bookstores create space for stories that don’t always fit neatly into a single category. They make room for emerging voices, for layered narrative, for books that rely on word of mouth rather than algorithms. They also create connection. Between readers and stories. Between authors and communities. Between people who might not have crossed paths otherwise. That connection is something I’ve come to appreciate more deeply over the past year.
Seeing The Harbinger, A Triquetra Chronicle find its way onto the shelves of indie bookstores, and into the hands of readers through those spaces, has been one of the most meaningful parts of this process. Not just because of the visibility, but because of what those stores represent.
They’re not just places to buy books. They’re places where stories are shared, recommended, talked about, and carried forward.
This Saturday is Indie Bookstore Day, and here in Northeast Ohio there’s even a passport encouraging readers to visit multiple shops throughout the region. It’s a simple idea, but an important one; get out, explore, and support the spaces that keep reading a local, human experience.
I’ll be at Walls of Books in Parma for Indie Author Day, and I’m looking forward to being part of that energy again. There’s something about those in-person conversations - the questions, the recommendations, the unexpected connections - that reminds you why stories matter in the first place.
If you have a local indie bookstore, this is a good week to step inside. Take your time. Browse. Pick something up you weren’t planning to.
You never know what you might find.
